At JBW Farm Fresh we practice a regenerative agricultural method that aims to restore and enhance the health of our land and animals by prioritizing the health of our soil and overall biodiversity on the farm. This resourceful approach goes further than typical sustainable farming methods by actively working to improve soil health and the environment as a whole. At JBW, we implement regenerative practices such as rotational grazing, use of natural fertilizers (i.e., animal and insect manure), and limiting the use of pesticides.

A key component of having a regenerative farm is soil health. After an extended period, farmland can become “addicted” to synthetic products. It has been our mission to aid in restoring the land through natural, holistic practices. We maintain our healthy soil through methods such as composting and rotational grazing. One of the biggest contributors to our soil fertility on the farm is dung beetles! In our pastures, these insects burrow in livestock manure and spread it by tunneling through the land. They provide tremendous benefits to our farm’s ecosystem, but specifically to our soil. By improving the soil health, we are eliminating the need for synthetic fertilizers and pesticides and increasing the overall health and fertility of our land.

Biodiversity is another important aspect of running a successful regenerative farm. By promoting a diverse range of plant and animal species on the farm, we create a more resilient and sustainable ecosystem. For example, we welcome thistles, which tend to be a typical nuisance to most farmers. With our method of farming, thistles provide great insight into the health of our soil. A large, vibrant deep colored thistle reveals to us that our soil is in a more sustainable condition. Creating an environment with a diverse range of plants and animals directly aids in improving soil health, pest control, and increasing the overall productivity of the farm. Here at JBW we raise South Poll Cattle, Kiko Goats, hair Sheep, heritage hogs, ducks, chickens, and honeybees.

Regenerative farming also prioritizes ecosystem resilience. By working alongside nature and not using man-made fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, we are able to create a more balanced and resilient ecosystem for our plants and animals.
